At Tregolls Area Resource Base, our priority is supporting the developmental journey of every learner before focusing on academic learning. All of our children have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and we plan learning around each child's individual needs, Intervention Provision Map (IPM) and interests, using small, achievable steps to help them make meaningful progress.

Our ARB consists of two classes:

Kensey Class

Reception to Key Stage 1 learners, taught by Amy Rand.

Kenwyn Class

Key Stage 2 learners, taught by Hannah Davies.

Across both classes, children are supported by a highly skilled team of SEND Teaching Assistants who know our learners exceptionally well. They are expert communication partners and play a vital role in supporting every child to engage, communicate, learn and thrive.

Our Curriculum

We deliver a child-led curriculum that is carefully tailored to the developmental stage of each learner. Our curriculum draws upon:

• The Engagement Model
• The 7 Areas of Learning and Development within the EYFS
• The National Curriculum

This enables us to provide an ambitious, personalised learning experience for all children, regardless of their starting points.

We have three main topics each year, allowing children to fully explore, revisit and deepen their understanding through meaningful and engaging experiences:

Autumn Term: All About Me

Exploring ourselves, our families, our interests, emotions, likes and differences.

Spring Term: My School Community

Learning about our school, friendships, people who help us and our wider community.

Summer Term: Seasons and Changes

Exploring seasonal changes, weather, growth, nature and the changing world around us.

Our curriculum is flexible, practical and sensory-rich, supporting children to build the foundational skills needed for learning, including communication, emotional regulation, attention, engagement, independence and motor development.

Assessment

We assess children's progress using the Cherry Garden Branch Maps, which celebrate and recognise small-step achievements across five key areas:

• Communication, Language and Literacy 
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development 
• Mathematical Development
• Expressive Arts and Design 
• Understanding of the World 

These branches help us track meaningful progress and ensure every child's achievements are recognised and celebrated.

Communication

Communication is at the heart of everything we do. We use a total communication approach, including:

• Makaton
• Widgit Symbols
• Objects of Reference
• Sound Buttons
• Spoken Language
• Visual Supports

This ensures every child has a voice and can communicate in the way that works best for them.

Supporting Development

We also follow evidence-based approaches, including the Pyramid of Learning, to support sensory, motor, communication and cognitive development. By building strong foundations first, we give every child the best possible opportunity to access learning, develop independence and achieve success.
