Writing Curriculum Intent – Tregolls Academy

At Tregolls Academy, our intent is to develop confident, skilled and motivated writers who can write effectively for a wide range of purposes and audiences. We want all children to see themselves as authors and to take pride in communicating their ideas with clarity, creativity and accuracy.

Following the expectations of the National Curriculum, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils:

A rich foundation in transcription and composition

We teach pupils to build strong foundational skills in spelling, handwriting and grammar, enabling them to write fluently and confidently. Children learn to spell using high‑quality phonics teaching in the early years, followed by progressive spelling patterns and rules as outlined in the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2. By the end of Key Stage 2, our aim is that all pupils will develop a fluent, joined handwriting style and apply this consistently across subjects.

Wide vocabulary and effective language choices

We explicitly teach vocabulary so that children can make ambitious language choices in their writing. We ensure that pupils acquire and use a broad and varied vocabulary, helping them develop precision and impact in line with the National Curriculum requirement to “select appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning.”

Skilled authors who plan, write and edit with purpose

We teach pupils how to write for a variety of purposes—such as to entertain, inform, persuade and discuss—reflecting the curriculum’s emphasis on composing and structuring writing effectively. Throughout their time at Tregolls, children learn to plan their writing, draft their ideas and edit their work with increasing independence. We value the editing process as an essential part of being a successful writer, teaching children to revise their work thoughtfully to improve clarity, accuracy and effect.

High expectations and pride in presentation

We expect all children to present their work neatly and take pride in its final form. Across the school, pupils are supported to organise their ideas logically, present writing clearly and apply taught skills with consistency in every subject.
